Helmet Therapy

What is Deformational Plagiocephaly?

Deformational Plagiocephaly is an abnormal shape of a baby’s head caused
by external forces. The baby’s head may appear to be misshapen or asymmetrical immediately after birth, or the abnormal shape may become noticeable in the first few months of life. Parents, grandparents, and caregivers are often the first ones to
notice the unusual shape of the head and they usually bring it to the Pediatrician’s
attention during a regular visit.

Common Helmet Therapy Questions:

Why does my baby have a flat spot?

Flat spots (plagiocephaly) can happen for multiple reasons, sleeping position, being a twin, forcep or vacuum delivery, premie just to name a few. Each situation is unique and can be discussed with our therapist.

Doctors referrals are not required to seek helmet therapy. They may be required by some insurance companies to cover the cost of the therapy but not always required. Our staff and therapists can help guide you through the requirements of each case.

Not all children need a helmet to correct minor plagiocephaly. Repositioning and conservative exercise treatment with a physiotherapist may be enough to correct minor plagiocephaly. All options are discussed during the initial appointment to determine the best approach to helping.

Babies that are started into therapy at an earlier age will need to wear the helmet or see the therapist for shorter length of time, while those starting therapy later (eg after 8 months of age) will need to wear the helmet for longer.  At a younger age the head grows faster and allows for correction to happen faster.  For helmets to be effective it is recommended to be worn for 23 hours a day.

Wearing the helmet should not cause pain or discomfort as the correction is a gentle sublte process. If discomfort or skin irritation is notice then the helmet may need adjustment by the therapist who made it.
