Don't hide from pelvic health problems. You have options!
Are You Struggling With:
- Urinary Incontinence
- Pelvic Organ Prolapse
- Chronic Pelvic Pain
- Pre or Post Natal Pelvic Pain
You are not alone! One in three people will experience a pelvic health problem by the time they are 60, however many symptoms are completely treatable through non-invasive procedures.
At Tri City Physiotherapy, we provide intensive care services for problems ranging from menstrual irregularity, pre and post natal care, urinary incontinence, and pelvic organ prolapse in a comfortable setting. Working together, Tri City Physiotherapy and your physician can find solutions that don’t involve medication or surgery and are often covered by most health plans.
Focusing on the Underlying Cause of Discomfort
Tri City Physiotherapy’s pelvic health program focuses on the underlying cause of discomfort found at the musculoskeletal level. Starting with a thorough pelvic exam, a pelvic health trained physiotherapist will assess the structure for signs of problems which may include loss of function, pain, and dysfunction. Our physiotherapist will then develop a rehabilitation program recognized as a first line of defense against incontinence and pelvic pain, without involving medication or surgery.
Patients are seen in individual treatment rooms with total consideration to privacy and compassion for what they are experiencing. Once an initial assessment has taken place, a therapist may use:
- manual manipulation,
- pelvic floor retraining & strengthening exercises,
- and education in an effort to reduce discomfort.
Our clinics give every mother, sister, daughter, and grandmother a chance to be forthcoming about reproductive irregularities and chronic urinary conditions so they can continue to lead an active lifestyle without hesitation.

An Ideal Program for a Number of Conditions:
Pelvic health physiotherapy helps patients manage a number of conditions specifically brought on by child birth, urinary stress, female reproductive issues, and general pelvic floor pain. Tri City’s pelvic physiotherapy can help to treat and manage:
(stress incontinence, urge incontinence/frequency, mixed incontinence)
Incontinence is the involuntary loss of bladder and/or bowel control due to weak pelvic muscles. Pregnancy, an injury to the pelvic area, neurological disorders and the natural aging process also lead to increased incidences of incontinence. A pelvic health physiotherapist will use varied treatments either alone or in combination to address the cause of a patient’s incontinence. A pelvic health physiotherapist might also want to help a patient with education and may suggest that they keep a diary.
Pelvic Organ Prolapse
(cystocele, rectocele, urethrocele, enterocele, uterine prolapse, vaginal vault prolapse)
Pelvic organ prolapse is the abnormal descent or herniation of the pelvic organs from their normal attachment site or position in the pelvis. This occurs due to weakened muscles or ligaments that can occur from a number of causes including childbirth, previous surgeries and obesity. Depending on the grade of prolapse, a physiotherapist would consider treatment options that involve pelvic floor strengthening exercises, functional training and education.
Chronic Pelvic Pain
(painful intercourse, vaginismus, vulvodynia, vestibulodynia, interstitial cystitis, pudendal neuralgia, irritable bowel syndrome, endometriosis, Pelvic Floor Tension Myalgia)
Pain the pelvic area can have a profound effect on an affected individual’s life. Often vaginal and rectal pain is significant enough that having pain-free sexual intercourse is impossible. Unfortunately for those individuals who don’t seek treatment, after six months pelvic pain can become chronic. To help treat pelvic pain, your pelvic health physiotherapist will often use manual techniques in combination with pelvic floor retraining. Education about pelvic health can also have an important impact as well.
Pre- and Post Partum Education and Rehabilitation
During pregnancy, some women experience pelvic pain that can affect their ability to walk or sit properly. Sleeping comfortably can also become a thing of the past. Post natally, it is quite common for women to have issues as a result of childbirth. Caesarean sections and episiotomies can cause weakness and pain. Some women experience diastasis recti – a separation of the abdominal wall muscles. Incontinence is quite common as well.
A pelvic health physiotherapist can help every step of the way. The goal is always to prepare the body for labour, reduce discomfort during pregnancy and work proactively to address any issues that may arise after childbirth.
Just as physiotherapy can be applied to any bodily pain, so too can this evidence based practice make a difference when it comes to managing one’s pelvic health. Conditions such as urinary incontinence due to stress or urgency, various pelvic organ prolapse conditions, constipation, chronic pelvic pain, and pre/post-partum conditions experience relief with manipulative therapy and exercise.
Many pelvic health centres will include a physiotherapy department, at Tri City Physiotherapy we bring you one step closer with dedicated therapists who specialize in pelvic health therapy every single day.
Common Pelvic Health Therapy Questions:
Certainly, it’s always good to ensure you are not dealing with more serious issues. However, it’s very common to receive a referral to a physiotherapist following an initial consultation with your regular physician, although it is not required. If you have received treatment or previous examinations, it is recommended to bring all of your past medical evaluations with you to your appointment.
Tri City Physiotherapy services are covered by most extended health insurance companies and in some cases Veterans Affairs and Medicare – such as OHIP. Not sure if you’re covered? No problem. We can help you find out (and usually within the hour). Just call us 1 (519)-620-2229.
